Education for midwives, lactation consultants (group one)

Midwives and lactation consultants are required to complete a minimum of 20 hours education, including at least three hours of clinical experience. Within the 20 hours of education there must be a minimum of eight hours of education covering the WA Health Baby Friendly health Initiative - hospital breastfeeding policy, supporting clinical guidelines and information flyer.

The Network has developed an e-learning package and a BFHI orientation presentation for midwives and lactation consultants. In addition the Women’s and Newborns’ Health Service on-line self directed learning package has a link below as an alternative method of learning.

Midwives and lactation consultants must undertake a further eight hours of breastfeeding education every three years.

Elearning package

The package will take a minimum of 10 to 12 hours to complete and includes self assessment. Successful completion of each module will direct you to an evaluation survey and certificate.

This module explains the explains how to use the package and will take you approximately 10 to 15 minutes to complete.

Module 1 (6.41MB)
This module explains the global breastfeeding initiatives including the Ten Steps to successful breastfeeding and will take you approximately 2 hours to 2½ hours to complete.

Module 2 (1.02MB)
This module explains the benefits of breastfeeding and will take you approximately 2½ hours to 3 hours to complete.

Module 3 (17MB)
This module explains how breastfeeding works and will take you approximately 2½ hours to 3 hours to complete.

Module 4 (5.75MB)
This module explains the common breastfeeding challenges and will take you approximately 3 hours to 3½ hours to complete.
