Review of the home oxygen service in Western Australia

The prescription and provision of home oxygen therapy in Western Australia was recently reviewed. The review will be released along with a new statewide policy for home oxygen. The review was carried out by a working group which consulted clinicians, service providers and home oxygen consumers who were reached via an extensive survey. The consumer survey has also identified some gaps in consumer knowledge about the home oxygen service and will provide a basis for education.

The main findings of the review relate to:

  • prescribing criteria and practice
  • clinical guidelines and governance systems to ensure compliance with policy guidelines
  • workforce strategies and professional development
  • consumer information and education
  • ongoing evidence based research to contribute to the body of evidence and best practice for the use of oxygen therapy for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other conditions
  • monitoring new and emerging technologies and equipment
